Thoroughbred Spirit | A Fearless Trot to the Crown

In the United States, the "Triple Crown" is the most coveted achievement in Thoroughbred horse racing- awarded to a three-year-old horse that wins three specific races in the same season. The challenge is considered one of the most difficult feats in all of sports, with only 13 horses having accomplished it since the series of races were first began in 1875. 

Winning the Triple Crown requires a rare combination of exceptional talent and luck.

The Triple Crown races:

• Kentucky Derby: The first and most famous leg, run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May.

  • Distance: 1.25 miles.

  • Nickname: "The Run for the Roses," after the blanket of roses given to the winner.

• Preakness Stakes: The second leg, run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

  • Distance: 1 3/16 miles, the shortest of the three races.

  • Nickname: "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans," after the state flower of Maryland.

• Belmont Stakes: The third and final leg, run three weeks after the Preakness at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

  • Distance: 1.5 miles, the longest and most grueling of the three.

  • Nickname: "The Test of the Champion," because of the long distance and short rest period between races.
