From Hill to Fulper | The Colorful History of Stangl Pottery

Stangl Pottery holds a celebrated place in American ceramic history as a pioneer of colorful, hand-painted dinnerware made from the red clay of New Jersey.

The Stangl Era:

1926-1929: Martin Stangl became president of Fulper and informally began using the brand name "Stangl Pottery". Following a devastating fire at the Flemington plant in 1929, operations moved entirely to a newly acquired facility in Trenton, New Jersey.

The Golden Age & Iconic Patterns (1940s–1960s)

During the mid-century era, Stangl became a staple in American homes, beloved for its vibrant, casual, and warm farmhouse-style motifs. Famous designers like Kay Hackett helped create dozens of iconic dinnerware lines. Some of the most highly sought-after vintage patterns include:

The Finale
(1955–1978)

The Legacy: At its peak, Stangl was sold in thousands of luxury department stores nationwide and operated one of the country's first popular factory outlet showrooms in Flemington. Though production ceased forever in 1978, Stangl's cheerful patterns remain deeply prized by modern antique collectors.

Today, because every surviving plate, bowl, and teacup carries the unique variances of the individual artist who painted it, vintage Stangl dinnerware remains a highly prized treasure for collectors of American art pottery and can be found at stores like ours.
