Deja Vu

🏡 Home Trend Flashbacks: A Journey Through the Décor of the 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s

Trends may come and go, but one thing’s for sure- each decade left a bold stamp on how we lived, lounged, and styled our homes. Let’s hop in our time machine and revisit the unforgettable home trends of the 1960s through the 1990s. Whether you lived through them or are rediscovering their charm today, these flashbacks prove that style is cyclical, and nostalgia never goes out of fashion.

1960s: Mod, Mad Men, and Modernism

The 60s were all about space-age optimism and sleek modernity. Think clean lines, geometric patterns, and a pop-art palette of mustard, avocado, and tangerine. Danish-inspired furniture with tapered legs graced every living room, while starburst clocks, shag rugs, and bold wallpapers turned ordinary spaces into vibrant, funky showrooms. Kitchens gleamed with pastel appliances and formica countertops, and lava lamps lit the night with psychedelic flair.

Flashback Favorite: The iconic sunburst mirror and Eames-style lounge chairs still inspire today’s interiors.

1970s: Earth Tones and Boho Vibes

The 70s turned down the mod brightness and got groovy with earthy tones, natural textures, and a strong pull toward the handmade. Macramé plant hangers, wood paneling, and rattan furniture transformed homes into cozy, lived-in sanctuaries. This was the era of the conversation pit, bean bags, and fern bars. Décor often included amber glassware, ceramic mushrooms, and yes- owls galore.

Flashback Favorite: The return of houseplants in vintage planters and boho wall hangings shows the 70s never really left.

1980s: Bold, Bright & A Little Bit Bougie

Everything in the 80s was big—big hair, big padded shoulders, and big decorating choices. Homes embraced luxury and excess with mirrored furniture, glass blocks, and metallic accents. Pastels made a splash too, especially in the Miami-Vice-inspired combo of teal and pink. Wall-to-wall carpet, floral Laura Ashley prints, and faux finishes (like sponge painting) made everyone feel like a designer.

Flashback Favorite: Brass and chrome are staging a comeback, and we’re still not over the sculptural elegance of Lucite.

1990s: Comfy, Cozy, and Country Chic

By the 90s, we all wanted to relax. Enter the rise of the “casual comfort” movement- overstuffed sofas, denim slipcovers, and hunter green everything. Country floral and stenciled borders; Pine furniture ruled the scene, and dried eucalyptus hung proudly above mantles. Décor themes were cozy, coordinated, and sometimes…a little cluttered (hello, geese in bonnets!).

Flashback Favorite: Vintage Corelle, stoneware, and cottage florals are back in a big way with fans of cozy living.

The Comeback is Real

Many of the treasures during these decades continuously resurface and all are a huge aspect of today’s design trends. Vintage lovers are mixing mid-century lines with boho textures, layering floral 90s comfort with modern minimalism, or going all-in on maximalist glam à la the 80s.

At Dishfunctional, we see these pieces come through our doors every day and witness their adoption process and become part of a new story that doesn’t leave the great aspects of these decades behind.
