Remember when fun didn’t come from a screen- unless you piled into the car and rallied for position as you headed to a drive-in movie? When the sound of the ice cream truck or the smell of something baking in the kitchen meant everything? The crickets buzzed through an open window- as a metal fan hummed you to sleep after entertaining hour-long Darth Vader voice impressions. Summer cookouts where a full blown spread with homemade fixins made with love, and table clothes were a must. Metal coolers for drinks were packed with ice and there was always time to make the best iced tea ever. If not in your backyard, the backdrop was a lake or included some type of pool or a sprinkler attached to a hose. New flip flops, inflatable toys and balls from the bin at the grocery store, caps, giant pixie sticks, and candy dots on paper were the highlight of your life; And the best entertainment was as simple as a jar to catch lightening bugs or a box to house your turtle or frog family.
