As we all know, the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious celebration held on the 17th of March- the anniversary of the death of Saint Patrick, the foremost Patron Saint of Ireland. What you may not know is that it’s technically Saint Maewyn’s Day.
St. Patrick’s birth name was Maewyn Succat and he wasn’t actually Irish. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but returned about 432 CE to convert the Irish to Christianity. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools.
FUN FACT: According to research, there were no snakes in pre-modern Ireland. Reptiles never made it across the land bridge that prehistorically linked the island to the European continent. Therefore, Saint Patrick the apostle could not have driven snakes out of Ireland. It appears to be folklore or maybe he drove out snakes metaphorically?
