Horse racing dates back to ancient times and is one of the oldest sports on the planet

Did you know that the Kentucky Derby was started by the grandson of William Clark of Lewis and Clark? They say Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr was inspired to bring a horse racing event to the the US after visiting the Epsom Derby in England.

The rest is history.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown, followed by Preakness Stakes, and then Belmont Stakes. Meet Secretariat, the most famous champion thoroughbred racehorse and ninth winner of the American Triple Crown. Secretariat set and still holds the fastest time record in all three races~ galloping at speeds of up to 49 mph. To give you some comparison, top speed of the average horse is 25 to 30 mph.
